Dave's True Story - Dave's True Story
(Bepop) The sauciest band in New York is back to give you a big smooch. Chanteuse extraordinaire Kelly Flint has been singing the songs of David Cantor for more than a decade now, and it was on this delightful 1993 debut that their songs first made it to disc. For evidence that these songs have taken on lives of their own in the intervening years, look no further than this year’s indie film hit Kissing Jessica Stein, in which the young female protagonist goes Jill Sobule on a fellow femme to the strains of this very album’s "Crazy Eyes." Look for the song on that film’s otherwise fine soundtrack, however, and you’ll be S.O.L. To remedy this gross oversight by the soundtrack assemblers, Dave’s True Story has reissued their eponymous debut CD containing "Crazy Eyes" and another song used in "Stein," the swinging "Sequined Mermaid Dress." The album’s original 11 songs are complemented by four previously unreleased bonus tracks, including covers of "Fever" and "Blue Moon." A sublime collection of jazz-inflected pop with lyrics both wistful ("Marisa") and smirk-worthy ("Flexible Man"), this is classy, sassy stripped-down modern cocktail music that does not fade into the background. To listen is to be smitten. Pucker up. address: www.davestruestory.com YEAH YEAH YEAH, 2002
