The soundtrack to Bob’s charmingly indulgent, beautiful mess of a vanity project is perhaps the best Dylan tribute album of all time. Normally, covers of his songs are dime a dozen, but this is the only place to get The Magokoro Brothers’ version of "My Back Pages" (sung in Japanese), Articolo 31’s brilliant Italian rap take on "Like A Rolling Stone" (known here as "Come Una Pietra Scalciata"), and Los Lobos’ half-Spanish half-English "On A Night Like This" all under one roof. And since, as the old Columbia Records ad stated, "Nobody sings Dylan like Dylan," you get four new recordings from the man himself—three songs he’s issued before in a different form, plus a version of the traditional song "Dixie." The only drag is that four or five more new Bob recordings heard in the flick don’t appear here. Quibbles aside, it’s just another essential CD of Bob Dylan music. Which is cause for considerable consternation, really, because who among us has any room left on their Dylan shelf?
