Donna Summer - "She Works Hard For The Money"
Lest anyone forget a woman's worth.
The disco queen scored her biggest post-disco hit with this jam. To the accompaniment of a synth-heavy sound so distinctive of the early 1980's, Summer sings for all women of that era, calling attention to the plight of so many working paycheck-to-paycheck and depending on the kindness of the public in the form of gratuities. It was a point she accentuated by portraying the protagonist as a harried waitress in the music video. In the wake of the failed Equal Rights Amendment, it was a statement that women were not giving up their fight for economic equality.
