4/15/2006 - No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound

Finally! It was on this date that the normally enlightened state of New Jersey put into effect the law ending the outdated policy of legalized smoking inside bars.

Bitch if you want; all it means is we're all going to have a better chance of living longer. Those of us born in the early '70s have no recollection of smoking on planes, on buses, or in college classrooms; those born from the mid-'80s on will have no memory of the disgustingness of the smoke-filled bar.

The argument that "you don't have to hang out in a bar" or "you don't have to work in a bar" just doesn't wash. For many, alcohol and cigarettes go together, but there is no inherent reason why they should. I am all for vices, but only vices that affect the self. Your right to do whatever you want with your body ends where my oxygen begins. And after working in smoky Jersey bars for seven years now, I am truly happy that I no longer have to put up with this unnecessary health risk. In future decades, the vast majority of people will look back at times when smoking was allowed in any public space as not just rude but downright barbaric.

Ok, enough soapboxing. In the end, it was also another rock & roll Saturday at The Goldhawk.
