3/12/2010 - Around The Dial
Haven't posted a set list in a while, but as a reminder that I spin on Friday nights, here are last weekend's tunes. For those who don't know, haven't been, or are/were too drunk to remember, the night is called Beat Surrender, and the bar is called Northern Soul. It's at 557 1st Street in Hoboken. I'm there Fridays from 10 p.m. till close. There's no cover, and it's a cool neighborhood place. Now that the "It's too cold!" excuse is off the table, I hope to see you there. This last set went out to my good friend, mentor, and sometime DJ partner Pat Pierson, who the previous night had played his farewell set at The Loop Lounge in Passaic, where he had been holding musical court on Thursday nights for more years than anyone can remember. He has probably taught me half of what I know about DJing, and we continue to share our insights about the craft in what has become a must amusing ongoing conversation. I know Pat will be back with new gigs soon. So I started with the classic ode to DJs who go missing, The Kinks' "Around The Dial." That rolled into the question of the hour: "Who Will Save Rock & Roll?" by The Dictators, with which Pat also began his last Loop set, and which holds a special place in my heart as a former DJ at Manitoba's, the esteemed East Village watering hole run by Dictators frontman Handsome Dick. Then I had to play the first song Pat ever spun for me, The Replacements' "Unsatisfied," which he put on--without me even having to ask for it--within maybe a minute after I walked in the door of New Brunswick's long lost Bowl-O-Drome club, the first time I ever saw Pat spin in public. As the night went on, I did what I do. Plenty of favorites like Blondie and The Clash which I've spun a billion times but never get old. Cool stuff that's brand new (Hot Chip, Spoon) and new-ish (Dragonette, Monsters Of Folk). Even old stuff I've never dug out before; it may have been the first time I ever played "Jackson Cage" out at a bar, and it was certainly my public debut of "Paperlate." Yes, fucking "Paperlate." You don't like Genesis? I get it. I'm not "supposed to" like them either, I guess, at least not in the Phil Collins period, but there it is. It's a great pop song that popped into my head last week and never popped out. I had no choice but to play it. You also might be amazed how awesome it sounds alongside The Jam. No apologies. I have two ears and a heart, don't I? 10:00 Around The Dial - THE KINKS Who Will Save Rock & Roll? - THE DICTATORS Unsatisfied - THE REPLACEMENTS Don't Do Me Like That - TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS Cruel To Be Kind - NICK LOWE Paperlate - GENESIS Beat Surrender - THE JAM Theme From Sparta FC #2 - THE FALL Adidas World (7" Extended Radio Mix) - EDWYN COLLINS Connection - ELASTICA Life Of Illusion - FOO FIGHTERS Stay Positive - THE HOLD STEADY Got Nuffin - SPOON 11:00 Young Folks - PETER BJORN & JOHN Whole Lotta Losin' - MONSTERS OF FOLK Outtasite (Outta Mind) - WILCO The Bucket - KINGS OF LEON Don't Stand So Close To Me - THE POLICE A Girl Called Johnny - THE WATERBOYS Debonair - THE AFGHAN WHIGS Sound Of The Carpet - STEREOLAB Gimme Sympathy - METRIC Lights Out - SANTOGOLD Just Go Away - BLONDIE 1969 - THE STOOGES Crosstown Traffic - THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE Gimme Shelter - THE ROLLING STONES Morning Glory - OASIS Longview - GREEN DAY Reptilia - THE STROKES 12:00 I Will Follow - U2 Complete Control - THE CLASH He's A Whore - CHEAP TRICK Always Where I Need To Be - THE KOOKS Uprising - MUSE Silvia - MIIKE SNOW Mercy - DUFFY Million Dollar Bill - WHITNEY HOUSTON Love Long Distance - THE GOSSIP Take It In - HOT CHIP The Reeling - PASSION PIT Temptation - NEW ORDER Candy-O - THE CARS I Zimbra - TALKING HEADS Let's Go To Bed - THE CURE Bigmouth Strikes Again - THE SMITHS 1:00 We Are The People - EMPIRE OF THE SUN Time To Get Away - LCD SOUNDSYSTEM No Time - JUST JACK Pick Up The Phone (Disko Dali Remix) - DRAGONETTE Orinoco Ninja Flow - DIE ANTWOORD Turn The Page - THE STREETS Stylo - GORILLAZ FEAT.
